Striking Gaze: 5 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Eyelash Extensions

When you’ve just got your eyelash extensions done, you’re probably looking for ways to make them last as long as possible. Thankfully, with a few easy tweaks, your eyelash extensions will look fabulous for a few months, rather than a few weeks. By sleeping on your back, using gentle cleansing products, oiling and combing regularly, your eyelash extensions will last longer than most summer flings.

1. Sleep on Your Back

Sure, this may be a big ask (unless you already sleep on your back), but it’s really a must following your eyelash extension application. Since the glue takes a while to fully dry, if you sleep on your front you could get weird kinks instead of perfectly curled lashes. After a couple of nights, you’re safe to resume sleeping in facedown corpse pose.

2. Give A Little Lash TLC

When you have fresh eyelash extensions, treat them with a bit more love and care than you would normally. When you remove your eye makeup (liner, shadow, et. al.), gently sweep your eyes with a cleansing wipe instead of using cotton pads or puffs. These could inadvertently weaken the extensions, plus the cotton fibres can get stuck on your lashes.

Plus, don’t use waterproof mascara with eyelash extensions because the formula could degrade the adhesive. If you need to use mascara, apply only to the tips of your lashes.

3. Oil Is Your Friend

While you may think that keeping your eyelash extensions dry is the way to go, they actually stay nicer for longer when they’re oiled up. To keep your extensions looking their best, just rub a drop of baby oil on them with your fingers. In the first 24-36 hours, however, it is best to keep your eyelash extensions dry, which allows the glue to cure as strongly as possible.

This means avoiding steamy environments like showers, spas, saunas, and even outside if it’s a very humid day.

4. Comb Regularly

To prevent any wonky-looking lashes or criss-crossing, use a clean mascara wand to keep lashes straight and clean. To do this, close one eye at a time, place the brush on top of your lashes, then roll the brush over your lashes to keep them defined. A regular cleaning schedule will also keep your lashes looking great. Clean at least twice per week with foaming lash cleaner (or baby wash in a pinch).

5. Don’t Touch!

Finally, to keep your lashes looking fine, resist the urge to play with them. Your eyelashes will shed naturally, so with extensions this will help push them off. If an extension looks out of place, don’t twist it of pull it off—this might cause you to lose your natural lashes. Let your extensions come out on their own.

When you follow these tips, you lashes will stay healthy, look better for longer, and save you time and money at the salon. With good care and regular maintenance, your eyelash extensions will look fabulous for weeks on end.
